Data Privacy Policy
What is personal data?
Personal data is data that relates to a living individual who can be identified from that data. Identification of such a living individual can be by the information alone, or in connection with any other information in the data controller’s possession (or information that is likely to come into the data controller’s possession). The processing of personal data is governed by the General Data Protection Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (the “GDPR”)
2. Who is the data controller?
Diamond Way Teachings and Centres (“DWTC”) is the data controller; you can find our contact details below. Being the data controller means that DWTC decides how your personal data is processed, and for what purposes.
3. How do we process your personal data?
DWTC ensures its compliance with its obligations under the “GDPR” by: keeping personal data up-to-date; by storing and destroying it securely; by not collecting or retaining excessive
amounts of data; by protecting personal data from loss, misuse, unauthorised access and disclosure; and by ensuring that appropriate technical measures are in place to protect personal data. DWTC uses your personal data for the following purposes:
Maintaining our own records and accounts (this includes processing Gift Aid applications).
Informing you of news, events, and activities at our UK Diamond Way Buddhist Centres (as well as any international projects we are supporting).
Fundraising and promoting the interests of the DWTC charity.
4. The legal basis for processing your personal data
Our legal basis for processing your personal data derives from:
Your explicit consent that we can keep you informed about our newsletter, events, and other activities organised by our UK Diamond Way Buddhist Centres;
The necessity to process date for the purpose of carrying out legal obligations (including, for example, processing data in relation to Gift Aid);
The legitimate interest condition, which is when we process your personal data for the purpose of complying with your request for:
enrolment/registration for events; and/or
administering your donation (including for the purpose of financial auditing).
We may also contact you to inform you about services similar to what we have provided to you previously. In all correspondence, we will give you the option to opt out. We do not collect sensitive data about you unless there is a clear reason for doing so.
5. Sharing your personal data
Your personal data will be treated as strictly confidential and will not be shared with anyone outside of DWTC. We will only share your data with third parties outside of DWTC after first obtaining your consent to do so.
6. Our website
Our website uses cookies, which are small text files that are placed on your device to provide you with a better user experience when using our site. 7. How long do we keep your personal data?
We keep data in accordance with the guidance set out in our Data Retention Policy.
8. Your rights
Unless subject to an exemption under the GDPR, you have the following rights with respect to your personal data:
The right to request a copy of your personal data which DWTC holds about you;
The right to request that DWTC corrects any personal data if it is found to be inaccurate or out of date;
The right to request your personal data is erased where it is no longer necessary for DWTC to retain such data;
The right to withdraw your consent to the processing at any time;
The right to request that DWTC provides you with your personal data and where possible, to transmit that data directly to another data controller (this is known as the right to data portability);
The right, where there is a dispute in relation to the accuracy or processing of your personal data, to request a restriction is placed on further processing;
The right to object to the processing of personal data (where applicable);
The right to lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner’s Office.
9. Further processing
If we wish to use your personal data for a new purpose, not covered by this Data Privacy Policy, then we will provide you with a new notice explaining this new use prior to commencing the processing and setting out the relevant purposes and processing conditions. Where and whenever necessary, we will seek your prior consent to the new processing.
