The Beaufoy at the Open House Festival

We are thrilled to invite you to the Beaufoy for a special weekend as part of the Open House Festival! This festival celebrates London’s architectural treasures, and we are opening our doors to showcase the history, beauty, and spirit of this remarkable building — now home to the London Diamond Way Buddhist Centre.

Dates and Times:

Saturday, September 14th, 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Sunday, September 15th, 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM

What to Expect:

The Beaufoy, a Grade II listed Edwardian building, has been a beloved landmark in Lambeth since 1907. Originally built as a school for underprivileged children by philanthropist Mark Hanbury Beaufoy, it has played a significant role in the local community for over a century. After a period of disuse, the building was brought back to life by the London Diamond Way Buddhist Centre in 2014. We have lovingly restored parts of the building, and it now serves as both a place of meditation and a community hub.

During the Open House Festival, you’ll have the chance to explore this architectural gem, learn about its history, and discover its new role as a vibrant Buddhist centre.

Event Highlights:

Guided Tours of the Beaufoy
Step back in time as you walk through the halls of this iconic building. Our guided tours will take you through the main rooms, including the beautifully restored Great Hall, meditation spaces, and areas still undergoing renovation. Learn about the building’s transformation and the careful restoration efforts led by Diamond Way volunteers. Tour times: 12:00 PM, 2:00 PM, and 4:00 PM on both days.
Buddhist Talks and Guided Meditation
Curious about Buddhism? Join us for a short talk titled “What is Buddhism?” and take part in a guided meditation session. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the basics of Buddhist philosophy and experience a moment of calm in the heart of London. Talk and meditation times: 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM on both days.
“Diamond Way Buddhism in the UK” Photo Exhibition
Discover the history of Diamond Way Buddhism in the UK and its journey to establishing a home at the Beaufoy. The exhibition will feature photos and stories highlighting key moments in the development of our sangha (Buddhist community) and the extensive efforts to preserve the building.
Buddhist Art Display
Throughout the building, you’ll find exquisite examples of traditional Buddhist art, offering insight into the rich cultural heritage of the Karma Kagyu lineage, which the Diamond Way is part of. This is a unique opportunity to see artwork not commonly displayed to the public.

Facilities and Accessibility:

We are a family-friendly venue, with seating areas for those who need to rest during their visit. Refreshments will also be available, and our volunteers will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

We want everyone to feel welcome at the Beaufoy. Our building is equipped with toilets and drinking water, and guided tours are accessible for all ages. We are committed to making your visit enjoyable and informative.
